Regaine (Minoxidil) is proven hair loss treatment option that can dramatically slow the balding process.  Trials show that Regaine prevents hair loss in four out of five men and that nine out of ten men kept or regrew their hair.

Regaine comes in two versions:

For first-time users, it’s hard to know how they differ. Here’s a quick comparison, looking at usage, convenience, side effects, effectiveness and affordability.

Usage

Regaine foam is less messy to apply, so could be perceived as being easier to use overall. This makes users more inclined to use it twice a day, just as it should be! The liquid version leaves more greasy residue on the hair, so the foam was developed as a convenient option for hair styling.

Regaine foam also has less instances of intolerance, as it doesn’t contain propylene glycol. This compound enables Minoxidil to penetrate below the skin’s surface to affect the hair follicles. However, while this can enhance the efficacy of Minoxidil, it is apparently responsible for the majority of all cases of Regaine allergy or irritation in patients who are intolerant of the liquid form of Regaine.

Winner: Regaine foam

Convenience

Overall, the foam dries faster and could be less of a burden to apply. As mentioned above, it’s better for styling. If you’re looking for an option that’s super easy to use during your daily routine, the foam is probably a better bet.

However, if you have longer hair, the liquid could  suit you better as the foam could be difficult to get onto your scalp.

Winner: Regaine foam

Side effects

Like all medicines, Regaine can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Both liquid and foam Regaine are generally well-tolerated and only a small percentage of users report issues.

Side effects can include:

  • Chest pain
  • Headache (very common)
  • Facial swelling
  • Allergic reactions
  • Low blood pressure
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Weight gain

Effectiveness

Both Regaine liquid and foam are equally effective. Clinical trial data shows that around 60 percent of patients experienced an increase in scalp coverage. Regaine works by stimulating hair follicles to move from resting to growth phase. This also increases the length of the growth phase. The resting phase lasts six weeks in a healthy hair follicle, so it’s important to use Regaine regularly for at least that time to see the results of hair growth. Results can be seen within eight weeks, and could take up to 16 weeks to show.

Regaine dilates the blood vessels, allowing more oxygen, blood and nutrients to the hair follicle, encouraging hair to grow. Regaine increases the diametre of the hair shaft, encouraging the thickness of the follicles so hair growth is fuller.

Draw

Affordability

Regaine liquid and foam are both sold for the same price – that’s £44.99 – on the MedExpress website!

Draw

As you can see, both Regaine foam and liquid are very effective in terms of boosting hair growth. While it’s clear that the foam is easier to use, both are effective and affordable options for those looking to see real results when it comes to hair growth.
