Cyclizine information

Cyclizine is an anti-sickness medication used for relieving nausea and vomiting.
Cyclizine treats conditions such as vertigo and motion sickness, providing relief and helping you feel more comfortable.
We can also prescribe cyclizine if you are using weight loss medications such as GLP-1’s and experiencing side effects of nausea or vomiting.
Cyclizine works by targeting and blocking histamine receptors in the brain. Histamine is a natural chemical in the body that helps regulate the vomiting reflex.
When you experience nausea or vomiting, it’s because histamine in your brain is sending signals to your stomach, making you feel sick.
By blocking these histamine receptors, cyclizine prevents these signals from being sent, reducing or stopping the sensation of nausea and the urge to vomit.
You can take cyclizine with or without food. Typically, it can be taken as needed, up to 3 times a day, with at least 8 hours between doses. It’s important never to take two doses at once or an extra dose to compensate for a missed dose.
If taking for motion sickness, take cyclizine 1 to 2 hours before you start your journey. If the journey is long, you can take another dose 8 hours later, and one more dose 8 hours after that, if necessary.
Cyclizine starts to work about 30 minutes after taking it and you should feel better within 1 to 2 hours. The effects typically last 4 to 6 hours.
If you experience nausea or vomiting as a side effect of GLP-1 medications, cyclizine can help relieve these symptoms. You can take cyclizine up to three times a day alongside your GLP-1 medication, ensuring there are at least 8 hours between doses.
These side effects occur in more than 1 in 100 people. They are usually mild and tend to resolve on their own. Here are some tips to help manage them:
  • If you feel drowsy, you must avoid driving, cycling, or operating tools or machinery. Do not drink alcohol, as it will make you feel more tired.
  • Blurred vision can also occur. Do not drive, cycle, or use tools or machinery while experiencing blurred vision. If it persists for more than two days, contact your doctor.
  • Headaches are another potential side effect. Resting and drinking plenty of fluids can help. You can also take an over-the-counter painkiller like paracetamol or ibuprofen, if appropriate. If the headaches are severe or last longer than a week, speak to your doctor.
For a full list of potential side effects, please see your patient information leaflet attached to your medication.
